Newly-famous as an author of exotic tales set in the Near East, 24-year-old Byron is dressed like one of his own heroes in a dark robe and a red velvet waistcoat purchased in Albania on his Grand Tour. This painting was a gift to Thomas Wildman, who bought Newstead in 1818.
