Vyronas Friendship Agreement

Visit in April 2024

It was great to have an online meeting between Cllr Pavlos Kotsonis (PH for Leisure and Culture at Nottingam City Council) and  Mayor of Vyronas Sotiropoulos and deputy mayor Kleiasios with reference to Nottingham Vyronas friendship earlier in the year which is this year stronger than ever whilst Byron related activities are planned in both Vyronas municipality as well as Nottingham and Newstead Abbey celebrating 200 years since the death of the great romantic poet.

We are now leading on a year long exhibition programme held at Newstead Abbey in partnership with ACE, Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent university celebrating the life of Lord Byron and his affection to Greece. As part of our programming we have held Byron’s Bash on the weekend of the 20th of April (2024) to celebrate 200 years since the death of the great romantic poet. In our event on the 20th we had a welcome speech Cllr Kotsonis as lead member for the Nottingham museums service followed by Cllr Dovolos representing the Byron League for Philhellenism and Culture based in Vyronas municipality, Mr Velentzas representing the Athens Philhellenism museum as well as Mr Alexandrakis representing the Greek school of Nottingham.

This video shows the opening ceremony at the Byron’s Bash, hosted in Newstead Abbey in April 2024. Byron’s Bash saw an action packed weekend, celebrating Byron’s life in the House & Gardens. It showcased tales of Lord Byron, his dogs, songs, poems, trails and tours, plus full costume of the Lord Byron, stepping into the lake as part of the Byron celebration!

It was enjoyed by visitors that travelled long distances to Newstead Abbey, as well as local residents to Nottinghamshire that hold Newstead Abbey in high regard.
