NCM 1948-2

Born in Nottingham in 1861, Southall first used the tempera technique after visiting Italy in 1883. He was influential in the revival of this medieval technique. In the scene, possibly Fowey in Cornwall, a figure in a boat at lower left appears to be returning the woman’s wave.
