From New Ireland, a province of Papua New Guinea in Melanesia, this mask forms part of the Thompson Collection of Ethnographical material. W.J. Thompson was an antique and ethnographic dealer who donated the majority of his private collection to the museum. He never actually travelled abroad, purchasing many of the items in London.
