Regal murex snails live in the shallow coastal waters and reefs of the Pacific Ocean, from the Gulf of California to Peru. Murex snails are predators on other molluscs. Some drill into clams to feed upon the soft parts. In the past this species has been over-collected for its beautiful shell.
