John Player established his first tobacco manufacturing business in Broad Marsh, Nottingham, in 1877. After his death his sons took over and in 1901 the company merged with Wills and Ogden to form the Imperial Tobacco Company. By 1972 the company was one of the biggest employers in Nottingham.
