This lace of this evening dress and jacket was made in 1951 by A. C. Gill Ltd of Nottingham, for the Festival of Britain. The festival was held to promote a positive post-war recovery. The lace pattern was based on the recently discovered crystalline structure of Beryl, and the dress worn by Lady Bragg, wife of Nobel Prize winner Sir William Lawrence Bragg, one of the founders of the study of crystals by x-ray analysis.
